The Terrible Two's Revisted

(Well, Lisa - you were right! The post was on my other blog! Geesh!! LOL Thanks for pointing it out to me!) Well, my darling sweet grandson, who turned two on March 1st, is apparently started his Terrible Two's. The good news? He does it in just the sweetest way imaginable. For example, I'll ask him if he needs dry pants and he lets out a big long sigh...... and says.... "Nooooooooo" in the calmest voice you can imagine -- even if he's standing in front of you practically dripping wet. LOL! A week ago he was driving me crazy -- he would say my name "Umma" (for Gramma) and then he would repeat it and repeat it and repeat it, even though I'd responded to him! ACK! My kids used to do that when they were little and it drove me crazy then! But... Brayden finally learned how to say Joey's (the killer cat) name, and now walks about 6 inches behind Joey at all times, yelling DOUGHIE DOUGHIE DOUGHIE DOUGHIE DOUGHIE DOUGHIE DOUGHIE... Hahahahahaha... too too funny. So I know it's now all about giving Brayden choices, and trying NOT to ask him "yes" or "no" questions unless you're willing to actually go along with the NO answer you're going to get. For example, "Brayden, it's time to put on your jacket..." instead of "Brayden, do you want to get your jacket on?" LOL Ask him if he wants to wear a certain outfit and you might as well pack a lunch, because you're going to be there all day, since he'll say NO to every single one. Show him two outfits and ask him which one he wants to wear.... you're good to go :) Yesterday while he was here I was making a cup of coffee (he shakes the sweet n' low packet for me, puts it in my coffee, helps me add the cream, and stirs), and once it was made, he asked me if it was hot? I said yes. He looked up at me and said, "Umpa - sssssssssslllllllluuuuuurrrrppppp" -- making the same sound Jeff makes when he drinks hot coffee! LOL I laughed, and took a sip of my coffee and he looked at me again and said...."AAAAAHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" LOL! That's what *I* say when I have my first sip of coffee!!!! Observant little kid! Jeff's on vacation next week and I will have Brayden on Friday only. I admit to looking forward to a little bit of a break from babysitting two full days, but I also know I'm going to miss him! It's amazing how quickly you get used to having the little guy around for company! Although Jeff will be home from work, we're not planning on doing anything -- it's just a "get things done" week -- BUYING A NEW CAR (!), cleaning up the yard for Spring, getting the title to the SUV so we can donate it, some bank things to take care of, some house maintenance etc. It will be nice to have him home though -- and nice to sleep late!

Wow - Bloggified or me?

I just finished quite a long blog about Brayden and his terrible two's, plus Jeff being off next week -- and walked away and my post disappeared... POOF! Don't have time to rewrite but just hope that Blogger's scheduled outage tonight has something to do with how badly things are working lately. Tough to upload pictures, speed is very slow -- and now a disappearing post! I've been thinking about moving to wordpress or typepad just because of how long it's taking me to post photos these days... we'll see if this schedule maintenance is an improvement. sigh sigh sigh...

Ikea Ikea Ikea Ikea

Oh my... the new Ikea opened up today, not 2 miles from my house. First, let me say that I am proud of myself - I am NOT there on opening day fighting crowds and television cameras. This is a HUGE event here. People have been camping out in the parking lot for two days in very cold weather. Of course, here I am in the middle of my quilt room reoganization, and IKEA products would come in mighty hand right now -- storage boxes, possibly a new work table... I'd like to look at living room sets as well.. furniture and fun things for Brayden... ways to organize my kitchen better... I could go on and on and on... But I'm here, I'm not there. I haven't applied for an IKEA credit card either. Close eyes... breathe deeply... I love Pier 1 Imports. There's two stores within just a few miles of my house. I haven't set foot in the store for 15 years. There's a wonderful World Imports store about 5 miles from me. I stopped going about 5 years ago. We have an ice cream shop with a drive-thru less than 1/4 mile from me. I've been once in the 20 years it's been opened. A Dunkin' Donuts shop opened right next door to the ice cream place -- again, with a drive-thru. It's been open about six months and I *love* Dunkin' Donuts. I've not been to it yet. Seems weird, right? Well, it's because I know my weak spots. I'm an impulse buyer through and through. Peir 1 and World Imports are just too easy to spend way too much money on items I don't need. It's better not to go. The ice cream and donuts -- well, if I ever let myself go through those drive-thru's ONCE, there'd be no stopping me. Every time I so much as went to the post office, I'd be shoveling a donut or an ice cream cone into my mouth on the way home. But if I don't go that first time? I'm fine just driving by! So strange! But IKEA.... ahhhh, IKEA.... IKEA has USEFUL things at LOW prices. That's my kind of thing! Things to get me organized, which I love. Things to make my house look pretty, which I also love... I think there will be enough items that I do need or can use to counter the buying of things I don't need... Yeah... that's it... I can do this... My list for today. 10 Good Reasons not to go to IKEA:

Stretching the almighty dollar

I like nothing better than good tips on how to save money.... unless it's passing on good tips on how to save money. So here are two web sites that are extraordinary. One is how to save huge amounts of money, and the other is how to MAKE easy money... You won't believe what I found just wondering around blogs in the past few days. First, you can actually make easy money by sharing what you already know. I'm not kidding! Simply go to Daytipper.com and submit helpful hints. They pay $3 for each hint published. Now here's the thing -- this is a fairly new website, so there are not a lot of tips on there, so yours could well be the first, even for hints pretty commonly known! I submitted 6 tips and 4 got accepted. It took me about 15 minutes to type them up and submit them, for which I'll get paid $12 through my PayPal account (no, I didn't have to give them my password). The next day I submitted 5 more and got 2 accepted -- another $6. So that's $18 in two days. And these were pretty common hints (Look on their web page today and you'll see three of mine!). Here's one I submitted that got accepted, just to give you an example: How to make an old grill look new again Does your grill look old and dingy but works just fine? Check your local hardware or paint stores for a heat-resistant black metal paint in a spray can. Use painter's tape to tape off gauges and knobs, and then spray your grill. It will look like brand new! That's it! Now, they don't pay until your hint hits their web page, but my first three only took about 5 days to appear, so that's not bad! Next, here's an incredible web site I found today - Money Saving Mom. I haven't read through all of it yet, but what I've read, I like! For example, they tell you what's currently on sale at Walgreens, then give you coupons that match that item, so you end up getting the item for FREE (or very very cheap). I also saw Target and CVS stores, and I was only on the site for a few minutes. Good advice on how to save money on groceries, plan frugal meals and more. I love this site! I've added to my "feeds" so I'm sure to check it every time she posts. A few of the items she posts are good for a very short time only, so you want to stay on top of it. Lastly, here's a great link to a Proctor & Gamble site that will send you coupons for their products worth $31!!! And they are products I use already -- Dawn, Fabreze, Cascade, and more. I have no idea how long this site will be up, so if you're interested... do it now! No affiliation on any of these sites... I just want to share the wealth!

Today's List - Things I'm Procrastinating About

1. Calling XXXXX - a distant relative that likes to whine a lot, has imaginery illnesses, and generally leaves me with an unpleasant feeling after I talk with her -- but I still need to call and find out how she and her daughter are doing.
2. Cleaning my oven - even though it's "self-cleaning"! Need to do this before warm weather gets here.
3. Cleaning out my closet - too many clothes I don't fit into and need to get rid of. The good news? Some are too BIG!
4. Cleaning and organizing my garden shed. Brayden will be out there with me and I need to get the chemicals in containers and up out of reach. LOTS to do in there.
5. Deciding if I'm going to do a vegetable garden this year
6. Freecycling big items in the garage (armoir, bookcases, and more)
7. Posting items on Ebay
8. Defrosting the chest freezer.
9. Buying kitchen curtains. (Lordy, when did curtains get so expensive?!?)
10. Starting a savings account for Brayden's future. (I want to put money in on each birthday and Christmas.)
11. Freecycling DVDs and music CD's we don't watch or listen to anymore.
12. Re-touch paint in hallway
13. Re-touch paint on front door
14. Get new bathroom mirror for downstairs bath.
15. Plant 4-6 trees in back yard (we had 10 large trees cut down 2 years ago)

I can't imagine the regrets that James Frey must have over the whole non-fiction / fiction / biography debacle brought to light on the (gag-me) Oprah Show. I have stated in my blog before (and in several other Internet forums and formats) that it doesn't matter to me whether his book is on the fiction shelf or the non-fiction shelf at the local book store... what truly matters is that this man is a literary genius in my book. His style of writing is SO different and SO emotional and draws you in to his story and his characters as no other author I've ever read. It actually pains me to think that his work is automatically put on some narrow-minded people's "don't read" list simply because he showed poor judgment in not telling the truth about the origins of the story. Who cares?!? His writing speaks for itself. He's just coming out with a new title (located in the fiction department), Bright Shiny Morning, and I have pre-ordered it from Amazon, though it won't arrive until mid-May. Worth the wait, I'm sure!

Donald Westlake - If you haven't read Donald Westlake (or even better, listened to the audio books), you're really missing some great belly laughs. His Dortmunder series are some of the funniest books I've ever read. A group of bungling burglers have one adventure after another, never with the end results they want or your expect. The audio books really bring the characters to life and are a great way for the entire family to enjoy a car trip together. If you like Janet Evanovich's series, you'll love Donald Westlake.

Will Ferguson - Oh my - what a great book. The title is Happiness and boy, will this book make you think! The premise is "What would happen if self-help books actually worked?" Think about it. People would quit smoking, tobacco industries would go out of business. People would be happy with themselves as they are -- clothing guru's, beauty products, diet clinics -- all out of business. The end of civilization as we know it?

Brian Tracy - Eat that Frog. This book quite literally changed my life. Brian Tracy is known for his business and time management books, and this book is actually about time management. But housewives / homemakers need time management too! How to figure out what's important in your life and focus on it. I have this book in paperback and in audio! Considering how much I've been procrastinating lately, I guess I need to listen to it again!

The blizzard continues

Our house looks so pretty in the snow!

According to the local weather forecasts, we're do for another band of heavy snow. It has really not stopped snowing here for the past 23 hours. Our town is now listed as one of the top five in snow amounts in the greater Cincinnati / Northern KY /Eastern Indiana area. We are about 1/2 mile from I75 -- and here's what it looks like about 5 minutes ago.

Not good! I'm glad I'm not on the highway today! Cincinnati Airport is still open (one runway), but busses and public transportation are closed. We're on a Level III emergency which means no driving or you get ticketed. Of course the news station just covered a yuppy couple out in the Hummer because they wanted to take pictures...

Jeff is out shoveling walkways and pushing snow off our gazebo roof. I'm guessing we have about 10 inches of snow right now, still with another 4 to 6 to come, and MORE snow forecast for Sunday evening (tomorrow).

The Blizzard of '08

Yes, that's right. We've been hit by a blizzard! I've lived in Cincinnati for 20 years now, and this is the first time I can remember a "Blizzard Warning" instead of a "Winter Storm Warning". The snow started around 11am yesterday and it's still going strong. We've got about 10 inches of snow so far, with another 4-6 inches still to come. Winds are high (up to 40mph), temperatures are cold (18 degrees without wind chill), and it's snowing like crazy.

Our town (about 20 miles north of Cincinnati) has announced a Level 3 snow emergency, which means everyone must stay off the roads except for emergencies. I can't imagine how long it will be before the roads are cleared enough to go out again. I know the last time we had a decent snow (more than 6 inches) schools were closed for a week.

The New Englander in me thinks it sure is pretty around here! And I know the high snow drifts (see pic at right) will help insulate our house against the cold temp's. Southwestern Ohio houses are insulated all that well and cold weather and winds like this really creep in -- and keep that heat pump running! We'll be keeping the thermostat set at 65 in an attempt to prevent the electric heat from kicking in.

Joey the killer cat has not seen snow like this before. He went charging out the front door first thing this morning and probably sunk up to his shoulders and go stuck. I thought I was going to have to go out and rescue him, but he clammered his way back in the door.

We are VERY fortunate to have the world's nicest neighbor, who brings his snow blower to clean our driveway. Thanks, Harold! For the last snow storm, I made him a pan of brownies to say Thank You -- I'll have to think of something extra special to say thank you for this one!

My list for Today: What I love/hate about snow:

1. It's really pretty to look at!
2. There are no train whistles or traffic sounds in my back yard -- all is quiet.
3. We have a generous neighbor who brings his snowblower to clean our driveway.
4. Jeff and I can't go anywhere and it's always nice to have an excuse to stay home.
5. In Ohio if you can just stay in for a day or two the temps will rise enough to melt all the snow -- you really don't have to shovel.
6. Ohio drivers panic at the site of a snowflake.
7. I live on a cul-de-sac and cul-de-sac's are the last to be plowed - if they ever get plowed.
8. Joey the killer cat can't go out and is a REAL pain in the butt and has already bitten me twice this morning.
9. My grandson was supposed to spend the night tonight but "Umma and Umpa's Babysitting Service" has been cancelled due to snow.
10. I'm a little worried about my daughter's carport caving in under the weight of the snow -- since she has Jeff's car.

List for Today

10 things that just don't make sense to me.

1. Why today's younger parents feel their child(ren) MUST have a cell phone.
2. Why I can't find a "flip book" on YouTube that doesn't contain violence.
3. Why the general public has more faith, trust and belief in the local weather forecaster than they do in the President of the United States or in God.
4. Why people choose not to vote.
5. Why there are no more "censors" for television.
6. Why we (myself included) pay $7 to $9 for a magazine that is 80% advertisements.
7. Why authors make the bestseller list just because they've written other best sellers.
8. Why water isn't more expensive than gasoline.
9. Why anyone would buy frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
10. Why young drivers sit SO far back in the driver's seat. (Someone needs to do a study on the correlation between serious head injuries and the positioning of the seat!)
